The Greenway

Mum and I took the afternoon to explore the beautiful foreshore of the lake. After the dry summer and flat expanses of home it was so lovely to see green rolling hills topped with a sprinkling of snow for as far as the eye could see.

We found a local walking track that took us along the lakeshore, between trees laden with moss and lichen but denuded of leaves.

We followed the path for a mile, passing many locals and their furry companions, until we came upon Burgage Castle ruins. In 1940 the area surrounding the castle, dating back to Norman times, was flooded as a part of a dam project to supply water to Dublin.

A graveyard adjacent to the ruins was moved to higher ground and now only a cross with a plaque is located on the spot.
